Gas Cannons

Acoustic Methods – Gas Cannons

Gas cannons are acoustic pressure devices which were first developed for use in agricultural, but whose power and effectiveness in open areas has led to their frequent use at airfields.

Important characteristics of gas cannons:

  • Gas cannons repel birds by firing three consecutive blank shots of 146 dB each, loud enough to frighten any birds away from the targeted area.
  • The low profile of each device reduces the risk of collision with or obstruction to aircraft and other vehicles.
  • Gas cannons operate with a standard 11kg LPG bottle. One bottle’s worth is enough for up to 20,000 shots!
  • Individual cannons and suites of cannons can be controlled remotely with a handheld unit.
  • Each cannon unit is powered by a lead-acid battery, loaded continuously by a structured solar panel. Consequently, each system is almost entirely independent, and exceedingly low-maintenance.
  • Gas cannons are suitable for low to medium populations.

Advantages Disadvantages
  1. Controlled remotely
  2. Little maintenance required
  3. Suitable for large areas
  4. Low profile
  5. Solar power unit available
  6. When multiple units are present, can be conrolled singly or in groups
  • Must only be used at sufficient distance from personnel
  • Risk of habituation when used excessively
